Title: The Pros & Cons of of 5-wire Distribution Systems

Summary:

In 2000, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) collaborated with the New York State Electric & Gas Corporation, the New York State Energy Research & Development Agency, and the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation to investigate the benefits that a five wire distribution could provide in improving high impedance fault detection, reduce electromagnetic (EMF) fields, and stray voltage mitigation.  With the emotional level the issues of EMF and stray voltage still contain in the Midwest, it is worth an unbiased review of EPRI’s report to see whether these goals were achieved and the lessons learned.
